My Journey Towards Homeschooling

October 14, 2023 Adrienne Brown 0 Comments

Starting towards my homeschooling journey meant confronting the unfamiliar.

It all started during a seemingly ordinary morning trip to the local Safeway store.  I had an encounter that would forever change my perception of education.

A middle-aged white woman, of whom I had no knowledge or connection, approached me and my two young sons.

She made a startling proclamation that initially left me taken aback, “Homeschool your sons,” she urged, “They will not get a fair chance in this school district!”

The only knowledge I had about Homeschooling was that a woman in my neighborhood did it

Meanwhile, I had a neighbor who homeschooled her children. In conversation, she told me that she homeschooled her kids. Yet and still, the concept was totally unfamiliar to me.

In fact, I associated this woman and her lifestyle as strange. I immediately assumed that she had to be rich or something.

Nevertheless, the idea of homeschooling had never occupied a serious place in my mind, let alone my plans for my children’s future.

This was major because I was a single mother, struggling to make ends meet, with scanty knowledge about the intricacies of homeschool education.

Mystery Woman is persistent and makes a compelling case

She not only argued for homeschooling but also provided resources to help me get started.

It was a strange yet enlightening encounter, one that left me questioning everything I knew or thought I knew about education.

I began to question the preconceived notions that had conditioned my thinking – the belief that homeschooling was an exclusive privilege of the affluent, and the fear that I, as a minority, could not successfully educate my own children.

This unexpected encounter nudged me to confront my biases and think outside the box.

It forced me to consider an alternative path for my children’s education – a path that was unconventional, unfamiliar, and against the norm within my community.

Digging deeper into my homeschooling journey

As I delved deeper into the world of homeschooling, I began to see its potential and merits.

Through my journey, I discovered that homeschooling wasn’t just about teaching my children academic subjects.

It was about nurturing their curiosity, fostering their love for learning, encouraging their creativity, and helping them grow into well-rounded individuals.

It was about taking charge of my children’s education and tailoring it to their unique needs and interests.

The Journey was the Destination

This journey wasn’t easy, and it was marked by numerous challenges. However, looking back, I can say with conviction that choosing to homeschool my children was one of the best decisions I made.

I am grateful for the mystery woman who nudged me in the direction of homeschooling that day. And for the journey that taught me more about my children and myself than I could ever have imagined.

The decision to homeschool is not for everyone. It’s a commitment that requires time, dedication, and patience.

However, for those who choose this path, it can be an incredibly fulfilling experience.

My hope is that by sharing my story, I can inspire others to consider this unique and rewarding approach to education.

P.S. Here is a great program to help you start as a brand-new homeschooler of little ones!
